The 2026 WM Phoenix Open concluded in spectacular fashion at TPC Scottsdale on Sunday. Chris Gotterup grabs glory at the Phoenix Open following an excellent final round and successful sudden death playoff much to the dismay of Hideki Matsuyama.
Gotterup’s charge to the winner’s circle was fuelled by a scorching fourth-round 64. Entering the final stretch several shots back, the Maryland native geared up when it mattered most and recorded birdies on five of his final six holes. This late surge saw him finish at 16 under par, setting a clubhouse target that looked difficult to catch.
Hideki Matsuyama had the opportunity to clinch the tournament on the 72nd hole, but a missed birdie putt forced the contest into extra holes. The play-off, however, was short-lived. Returning to the 18th, Matsuyama’s challenge evaporated when he pulled his tee shot into the water. Capitalizing on the mistake, Gotterup remained composed, sinking a lengthy birdie putt to seal the victory in front of the raucous Arizona crowd.
Reflecting on his win, Gotterup admitted surprise at the turnaround after a slow start to the week. "I didn't think this would happen, especially after Friday and Saturday," he noted, celebrating the win alongside his girlfriend—the first of his professional victories she has witnessed in person.
Elsewhere on the leaderboard, world number one Scottie Scheffler continued his remarkably consistent form. Despite an opening-round struggle, Scheffler carded a final-round 64 of his own to finish in a tie for third. England’s Matt Fitzpatrick also enjoyed a strong finish, securing ninth place at 13 under par.
Having won the Sony Open in Hawaii just a few weeks ago, it’s fair to say Chris Gotterup has established himself as the early-season standout, who’s to say he won’t carry this momentum into the upcoming majors?
