Lydia Ko wins the HSBC Women’s World Championship

Taking place at the idyllic Sentosa Golf Club located on one of Singapore’s Southern Islands, the HSBC Women’s World Championship is a staple tournament on the LPGA Tour.

This weekend, having made steady progress over the course of the tournament, Lydia Ko entered the Sunday on 10-under-par with a one-shot lead over Charley Hull. Thailand’s Jeeno Thitikul was positioned in third place on 7-under.

Keeping her cool, Ko landed a trio of consecutive birdies on the 6th, 7th, and 8th holes to propel her further into the lead. A level par final back-9 holes was enough for her to seal the deal and emerge triumphant come the end of play.

No stranger to being at the hot end of the leaderboard on a nerve-wracking Sunday, Ko put her victory down to keeping her attention solely on her own performance:

“I just wanted to focus on my game as it was a pretty tight leaderboard. I didn’t know if I could win. But to win here in Singapore and get all the love, not only this year but for all the years that I’ve come, it means a lot.”

This weekend’s victory was Lydia Ko’s 31st professional win, a huge collection of trophies that includes three major championships and an Olympic gold medal. She’s been named New Zealand’s Sportswoman of the Year four times and is a highly revered cultural icon in her home country.

Clearly thrilled to have secured another victory, Ko joked “I dreamt last night that I won but then I woke up, and I was like, dang, it’s not real yet. It’s exciting to finally add Asia’s major to my major collection.”
